The Jock Strap piece is another work in progress. For this project I sat nude in a men’s locker room and knit myself a jock strap, commenting on the notion of woman’s work vs man’s work and appropriate activities within gender bondaries. What activities are appropriate in any given space? What activities are appropriate within a gendered space?

Photos by Rance Palmer.
I plan to reinact this piece in a locker room that gets more foottraffic, videotape it (hopefully capturing people’s reactions), and make sure I get some footage/images of myself wearing the jockstrap this time. Stay tuned.

About Ben Cuevas
Ben Cuevas is a Los Angeles based interdisciplinary artist whose work spans a wide range of mediums including installation, sculpture, fiber, photography, video, performance, and sound. Often incorporating several of these elements into any given piece, he makes use of digital media as a means of documentation. In light of its pluralistic qualities, he sees his work as a reflection on the condition of embodiment, which begs the question: what does it mean to have a body, to inhabit a body, to be a body incarnated in, and interacting with, this world?
ahhhmazing concept
Thought provoking and sexy! Are you on Ravelry by any chance?
Thank you! I am on Ravelry, but seldom go on there. My username is Benbot.

What an amazing and bold way of braking down the walls of gender based conceptions about knitting.
Thank you! Cheers!

Hi – I just stumbled upon your pics while browsing and I wanted to say how incredible they are. As a guy who recently started to knit I have to say that these pics are startling to me. I’ve only confessed that I knit to a few of my close friends since I guess it is still seen primarily as a female activity – but these pics make a pretty powerful statement about that. “Jockstrap 4″ is my favourite – I think because your penis is fully displayed it makes the message much more powerful – for me, your open legs showing off your hairy cock suggest a celebration/confident display of masculinity, which combined with the art of knitting taken into the very male world of the locker room makes for a fantastic image. Its my new screensaver
That is actually a lot of fun! I have just created a large quilt of jockstrap art (with the donor’s names embroidered on the waistbands) and a smaller wall hanging of 9 jockstraps that are anatomically correctly stuffed! I have repaired some of my own jocks (the elastic dies but the pouches last forever!) but I’ve never crocheted or knitted my own jock (although I did make some small ones for teddy bears.)
Brilliant.
Email back. Am in South Beach. Art Basel, etc. Do you show?

I like you without the jockstrap: very artistic, beautifies the world, could be controversial, PROVOCATIVE!
As a jockstrap enthusiast and an avid knitter, this post is everything I could dream of. Keep up the amazing art Hottie!
