Cunt Envy

Cunt Envy_WEBI’m excited to share my latest work, “Cunt Envy”, the first in my series of #Tweetables. My #Tweetables are an ongoing series of knit text-panels featuring 140 characters or less. Using the aesthetics of online memes, these works contain ideas that I feel have viral potential. They are created on a knitting machine, as a way of keeping pace with the rapid rate rate which ideas are generated and consumed in the internet age. “Cunt Envy”, specifically, is a direct response to the notion of penis envy, so deeply entrenched in our culture. It implores the viewer to ask, why not envy the cunt? What is it about the phallus that is so enviable, while the vulva gets short shrift? The ability to give life, or experience multi-orgasmic pleasure are things to be envied indeed.

“Cunt Envy” will be on view at the Queer Biennial I: LA, NY & Places in Between, at Coagula Curatorial in Los Angeles, CA, June 28th-July 19th. I hope you can join us for the opening reception, June 28th 7-11pm.

About Ben Cuevas

Ben Cuevas is a Los Angeles based interdisciplinary artist whose work spans a wide range of mediums including installation, sculpture, fiber, photography, video, performance, and sound. Often incorporating several of these elements into any given piece, he makes use of digital media as a means of documentation. In light of its pluralistic qualities, he sees his work as a reflection on the condition of embodiment, exploring what it means to have a body, to inhabit a body, to be a body incarnated in, and interacting with this world.
