I’ve been busy at work in my studio and I’ve decided to post a works in progress series of pieces that are going to be part of my thesis exhibition. For one of the installations in my show, I’m knitting sculptures that are representative of the anatomy that corresponds to the chakra system. The intestines, seen here, are influenced by the 3rd charkra, also known as the solar plexus, or Manipura (Sanskrit for lustrous gem).

About Ben Cuevas
Ben Cuevas is a Los Angeles based interdisciplinary artist whose work spans a wide range of mediums including installation, sculpture, fiber, photography, video, performance, and sound. Often incorporating several of these elements into any given piece, he makes use of digital media as a means of documentation. In light of its pluralistic qualities, he sees his work as a reflection on the condition of embodiment, exploring what it means to have a body, to inhabit a body, to be a body incarnated in, and interacting with this world.

This is amazing! That you thought of the intestines to be an organ that you could illustrate in a knitted fashion is so impressive to me.
I have never thought the same way about my intestines since seeing this piece. It has made me appreciate my intestines as never before. Let’s face it we can’t live without them, yet how much appreciation do they ever get? Zero.
The fact that Ben spent many hours of his life knitting these intestines and creating this beautiful art (which looks extremely intestinal I have to add.. it’s remarkable how the medium lends itself to that) has made me realize that everything is beautiful and can be seen as art.. even something as hidden and generally considered unartistic, as our very own intestines. The photography is also beautiful on this web site. One persons’ comment that saw it is that the photography is very professional. I love the 3D views on an invisible background.
Can’t wait to see the rest of the works in progress on this very exciting project!
