Here’s another chakra/anatomy piece that will be incorporated into the hospital room installation, as part of my upcoming exhibition at Canal Gallery in Holyoke, MA (which will be up May 2-13, 2010). This piece portrays the anatomy of the throat (note the pinkish thyroid gland), which corresponds to the fifth chakra.

About Ben Cuevas
Ben Cuevas is a Los Angeles based interdisciplinary artist whose work spans a wide range of mediums including installation, sculpture, fiber, photography, video, performance, and sound. Often incorporating several of these elements into any given piece, he makes use of digital media as a means of documentation. In light of its pluralistic qualities, he sees his work as a reflection on the condition of embodiment, exploring what it means to have a body, to inhabit a body, to be a body incarnated in, and interacting with this world.

truly amazing work. this, the heart, the intestines, the genitalia, EVERYTHING i’ve seen is beyond the pale. quite impressive
your work is just amazing! inspiration for the rest of us! pity you’re not exhibiting anywhere near greece!!
Your interpretation is absolutely exquisite!
I know your series incorporates more than the throat but as a thyroid patient, I want you to know what you have done here is especially important, as the thyroid in many respects is still in the thyloset (closet), in terms of timely diagnosis, treatment and support for patients with thyroid diseases and cancers. Many people do not know what a thyroid is, where it is, what it does, or that it controls the endocrine systems, many functions of the body, and that people cannot live without a thyroid gland.
I am part of a community at “dearthyroid.org” who are trying to bring awareness to thyroid diseases and cancers, as this disease desparately needs funding for research. There are about 50 million people with thyroid diseases/cancers and about 13 million people walking around undiagnosed.
Too many people go several years before being diagnosed properly and then many still struggle several more for proper treatment. Thyroid cancer and thyroid diseases are on the rise in girls and young women. Not enough is known about the thyroid gland or how to treat it by the medical community.
PS: I love all of your works, not just the thyroid. This is a very special collection you are creating. I hope I am able to come and view it May.
Please feel free to visit us at dearthyroid.org any time, or on FB and Twitter. I see your hometown is LA. The founder of Dear Thyroid is from LA also.
Best of Luck to you!
Lori
Thank you for the lovely comment Lori. Glad to know my work can help bring awareness about this issue. Cheers.

Hi Ben;
As mentioned in an email to you, I am in LOVE with your work and this installation. I emailed you regarding ideas on ways we can partner. I’m leaving you a note in comments because I’m not sure if you received my emails. They were behaving a bit wonky for a few days.
I hope to hear back and have an opportunity to work with you. Regardless, I wish you the very best of continued success.
Best,
Katie
